“Whatever doesn’t kill you, it’s gonna leave a scar”
In this very fractured society sometimes it’s better to just do your own thing and follow your own rules. An excellent example of someone who doesn’t conform to society is Mr Marilyn Manson. I’m very much drifting back towards my love for Manson again and I don’t care for anyone’s negative opinions towards him-I think he is amazing! He expresses individuality and I think that more people should do this. Wanna wear black everyday? do it! Wanna dye your hair random colours? do it! Wanna listen to heavy rock 24/7? do it!
Marilyn Manson is an American rock band formed by singer Marilyn Manson and guitarist Daisy Berkowitz in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1989. Originally named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, they gained a local cult following in South Florida in the early 1990s with their theatrical live performances. Marilyn Manson was one of the first people (including David Bowie) to really express themselves through the use of fashion. Anything that Manson wore was bold and defiantly reflected how he felt inside. Although Marilyn looked different to other people emerging in the 90’s, he had a great amount of talent in which he could make any song incredibly heavy with his powerful voice.
Marilyn Manson is famous for his wild contact lenses, his on-stage extravaganza’s and his unhealthy obsession with the Antichrist. Manson has become one of the most well known heavy rock artists to emerge from the 90’s as something other than ‘grunge’. Manson changed the style of rock music and made things slightly heavier just before the new millennium.
During quite a few of their concerts, Manson would ‘cut’ himself on stage in front of thousands of people and continue to perform as the ‘blood’ dripped out of him. A good example of this would be during the 1997 Live in Koln concert after he finishes singing the cover of “Sweet Dreams”, you can check it out on YouTube. Of course, to many people this seems insane and very controversial but it’s all part of the antics which earns him the name of the ‘Antichrist Superstar’.
I recently started reading the book ‘Long hard road out of hell’ which is Manson’s autobiography. The book begins with storied of Manson’s curiosity regarding his grandfather and some very disgusting graphic details of the events that Marilyn witnessed during his childhood. From what I’ve read so far it seems very interesting and will defiantly give you an insight into the mind of this very different character.
To this day, Marilyn is still producing songs and performing concerts although he may have calmed down a little now. He released an album in 2015 called “The Pale Emperor” which included two of my favourite songs “Killing Strangers” and “Mephistopheles of Los Angeles”. Overall, I think Manson’s career has been bold, exciting and certainly different. He has defined himself and made success out of his talents.
Thanks for reading,
